When someone searches Google for what your business does, one of two things happens. You show up, or you don’t.

If you’re not showing up, you’re invisible at the exact moment a potential customer is actively looking for you. Social media, email campaigns, and paid ads cover a lot of ground. But none of them fully compensate for being absent in organic search.

A solid SEO strategy fixes that, and it comes down to 5 things. Most small businesses are doing one or two of them. Few are doing all five. Here’s what a solid SEO strategy actually requires:

1. Keyword Research: Know What Your Customers Are Searching For

Every effective search optimization effort starts here. Keyword research tells you the exact words and phrases your potential customers type when they have a problem you can solve. Not guessing. Knowing.

Tools like SEMrush, Ahrefs, and Moz give you real data on search volumes, competition levels, and related terms. They remove the guesswork.

One thing I’ll say directly: stop chasing broad, high-competition keywords. “Marketing agency” is not going to move the needle for a small business. Long-tail keywords are where you can actually compete. These are specific three to five-word phrases with lower search volume but higher buyer intent. Someone searching “B2B marketing agency for industrial manufacturers” is a lot closer to a buying decision than someone searching “marketing.” That specificity is what brings the right traffic.

2. Competitor Analysis: Know What You’re Up Against

An SEO strategy that ignores the competition is incomplete.

Study what your competitors are doing. Which pages rank for them? What keywords are they targeting? Where are their backlinks coming from? Those answers reveal the gaps and the opportunities.

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. You need to understand the landscape well enough to find your opening.

3. Technical SEO: Fix the Foundation First

Strong content will not save a slow, broken website. Google cares about technical performance. So do users. A solid SEO strategy needs a website that performs.

Technical SEO covers everything that happens under the hood: site speed, mobile responsiveness, broken links, and redirect issues. If any of those are in bad shape, you’re working against yourself regardless of how good your content is.

Three things worth auditing on a regular basis:

  • Site speed — Google PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix are free starting points
  • Mobile usability — more than half of web traffic now comes from mobile devices
  • Broken links and redirect errors

It’s not glamorous, but it separates sites that rank from sites that don’t.

4. On-Page Optimization: The Content That Will Actually Rank

This is where your SEO strategy becomes visible to the people using it.

On-page optimization includes your meta titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, and URL format. Your meta title and description are the first things a potential customer sees before they ever click. If they’re not clear and compelling, the ranking doesn’t matter. Nobody clicks.

Write them for people first. Then optimize for keywords.

If your site runs on WordPress, an SEO plugin makes this manageable without requiring a developer for every small change. RankMath and Yoast SEO are both solid. They’ve earned that reputation over time.

5. Backlink Building: Earning Authority Over Time

Backlinks are links from other websites pointing to yours. Search engines treat them as votes of confidence. The more quality backlinks you have, the more authoritative your site looks to Google.

Quality matters more than quantity here. One link from a respected industry publication carries more weight than 50 links from low-authority directories.

Three practical ways to build them:

  • Guest blogging on relevant industry sites
  • Creating resources worth linking to, like original research, guides, or useful tools
  • Building genuine relationships with industry partners who reference your work

I’ll be straight about this: backlinks take time. It’s difficult to build a strong link profile in 30 days. But they compound. The businesses with the strongest backlink profiles today built them over years, and that’s not easy to replicate quickly.

The Honest Truth About SEO

A well-executed SEO strategy is not a fast solution. Seeing meaningful movement in rankings within 3 to 6 months is a realistic expectation, though it can take longer.

But here’s why it still makes sense. Organic traffic doesn’t stop when you turn off a budget. Once you’ve built real authority in search, you own that visibility in a way paid advertising can never replicate. The businesses investing in a real SEO strategy today are the ones that won’t be entirely dependent on ad spend two years from now.
